Although the actual cost savings to foreign aid cuts are minor from a budget perspective, they are symbolically powerful, said Lawrence Gostin, director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA. “It’s purely a symbolic blow, but for people in developing countries around the world it would be catastrophic.”

“These cuts would be self-defeating for the US and would result in far more suffering, disease, and death around the world”, he said.
