The Maeve McKean Women’s Law & Public Policy–O’Neill Institute Fellowship

In memory of Maeve McKean’s dedication to public service, and to honor a legal career devoted to serving others, the Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program and the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law will support a named fellow each year to work in the Washington, DC community at an organization focused on solving the most intractable public health issues.

A graduate of the joint degree program between Georgetown University Law Center and the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Maeve was a Women’s Law & Public Policy Fellow from 2009 to 2010. Her first year after graduating, Maeve was selected as a Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellow, dividing her service between International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS and the Center for Health and Gender Equity. As she would do throughout her career, Maeve was dedicated to using her education and skills as a lawyer to improve the lives of the most vulnerable.

In 2019 Maeve returned to Georgetown University as the executive director of the Global Health Initiative, a cross-university partnership based out of Georgetown University Medical Center, and later that year was jointly appointed as the associate director of the HIV Policy Lab at the O’Neill Institute.

Bookending her dedicated career to serve the local and global communities, the Women’s Law & Public Policy Fellowship Program and the O’Neill Institute for Nation and Global Health Law are joining together to ensure Maeve’s legacy and impact continues after her tragic death in 2020.

“Even in her short career, Maeve’s impact on the health and global health communities was profound. It is such an honor for us to launch this fellowship in Maeve’s memory; we are so proud to support a fellowship to advance health equity in Washington, DC, which suffers from some of the most stark health disparities in the nation, and around the globe. Maeve did everything with a spirit of joy, and it is in that spirit that we launch this fellowship. We look forward to the generations of dynamic and determined women who advance health equity in her name.”
