Gostin: The US, writ large, compares unfavorably in maternal mortality and morbidity to our peer countries, and even lower than some middle-income countries. States that have the highest maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the US are only going to get worse. Many pregnant individuals will get very sick and hospitalized unnecessarily; many will die unnecessarily. Make no mistake: these court cases and legislative decisions will cost people their lives. It’s not just a matter of affecting the practice of medicine—it’s literally a life-or-death matter.
