In the 21st century, we have witnessed grave violations of human rights and attacks on health care around the world. Attacks on health care — mental and physical — as well as threats targeting clinicians and civilians occur globally from Syria and Sudan to Ukraine, Gaza, and Myanmar. In 2022 alone, there were 1,989 reported attacks on health care facilities and personnel — the highest total in a decade. How can international law protect against attacks on health care and ensure accountability in these conflicts and beyond?
