This webinar brings diverse science and policy experts together to examine and discuss the status of H5 vaccines, their potential role in protecting humans, and priority actions that should be taken.
A major outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has decimated wild birds globally and is spreading in North American poultry and cattle. The current outbreak is unprecedented in both its scope and, particularly, the sustained mammalian transmission seen among marine mammals, European fur farms and cattle. Although human cases have appeared mild and human to human transmission has not yet been proven, surveillance is limited and at least one human case has occurred absent known exposure to infected animals. Taken together, there is significant concern that the current global panzootic could, given close ongoing human-animal contact and potential viral evolution, risk triggering a global pandemic.
This event is co-sponsored by the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law, the Global Health Institute, Center for Global Health Science and Security (CGHSS) and Center on Medical Product Access, Safety and Stewardship (COMPASS) at Georgetown University.
