Recommendations from a study funded by NIH:
Principal Investigators
Mark A. Rothstein, University of Louisville
John T. Wilbanks, Sage Bionetworks

Citizen scientists and other researchers not subject to the federal research regulations often perform health research using smartphones and other mobile devices. Although much of this research is promising, there are concerns about informed consent, privacy, independent review, and other issues. Is there a way to protect the interests of research participants and the public in an “unregulated” environment?

Mark A. Rothstein (L’73) and John T. Wilbanks will be presenting the conclusions from their research, and will provide recommendations for state legislatures, NIH, FDA, FTC, CPSC, CDC, consumer technology companies, and organizations of unregulated researchers.

Support for the Policy Briefing was provided by the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law.
