Drew L. Aiken, J.D., LL.M., was an Associate at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law and works on the Tuberculosis and Human Rights Initiative, focusing on migrants’ right to health and right to health issues concerning tuberculosis, detention and confinement. Drew holds a Juris Doctor and an LL.M. in International Law from the University of Miami, School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Michigan State University, with a minor in Philosophy.
Prior to joining the O’Neill Institute, Drew lived in Windhoek, Namibia where she worked as a Legal Research and Advocacy Consultant at the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA) and as an international consultant for UNDP Botswana. At ARASA, Drew led a number of projects in Southern and East Africa to research and document HIV and TB-related human rights issues and violations, including against LGBTI persons and other key and vulnerable populations, and conducted advocacy to promote an enabling and human rights-based approach to HIV, TB and the right to health in the region. Drew was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to research gender, customary law and legal pluralism issues in Namibia, which focused on the extent to which there is meaningful access to justice for rape victims. Prior to her time in Namibia, Drew was a Legal Fellow for the Africa Program at the Center for Reproductive Rights where she worked on litigation, research and advocacy concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights issues in Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania in national and international forums, including litigation in Kenya for the detention and abuse of women who had just given birth.
