The O’Neill Institute is proud to announce that Dr. Bedima Duut (LL.M., ‘24) has been appointed a Justice of the High Court of Ghana by President John Dramani Mahama. Duut graduated in 2024 from the LL.M. in Global Health Law and Governance program.

“Bedima’s appointment is an extraordinary achievement and a proud moment for the O’Neill community,” said Professor Michele Bratcher Goodwin, Georgetown University O’Neill Professor of Constitutional Law and Global Health Policy and faculty director of the O’Neill Institute. “Bedima’s appointment to the High Court of Ghana is a testament to his brilliance, compassion, and commitment to advancing health and human rights. His leadership, excellence, and service exemplify what our Health Law LL.M. program seeks to cultivate around the world, and we are honored to count him among our distinguished alumni.”

Justice Duut brings a combination of expertise in global health law, global health governance, and public health to his new role on the High Court of Ghana. A pharmacist turned lawyer, he has dedicated his career to improving health outcomes and advancing justice in Ghana and beyond. Prior to this appointment, Justice Duut served as a circuit court judge and worked with Ghana’s Ministry of Health as a district director of health.

“The LL.M. Program in Global and National Health at Georgetown Law instilled in me the core skills of legal research, a spirit of hard work, and a deep sense of friendship,” said Justice Duut. “It helped me recognize law as a tool for achieving justice and inspired me to use it, in every way possible, to improve the lives of individuals and communities. These lessons will guide my work at the High Court of Ghana, where I will strive to ensure that the law serves as a powerful instrument to safeguard health and human rights.”

“It has been a privilege to watch Bedima’s journey as both a scholar and a professional. His appointment to the High Court of Ghana is richly deserved, ” added Professor Lawrence O. Gostin, founding O’Neill Chair in Global Health Law and Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University. “He will bring to the bench the same thoughtfulness, commitment to justice, and humility that he showed here at Georgetown Law.”
