This fall, the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law welcomes the newest cohort of health law LL.M. students at Georgetown Law. This dynamic group of 24 scholars represents a diverse range of experiences, educational backgrounds, and specialties.
“We are honored to welcome these scholars to the Georgetown Law community, where they will benefit from the extraordinary resources of a world-class research institution that is in the heart of the nation’s capital,” said Professor Michele Bratcher Goodwin, Georgetown University O’Neill Professor of Constitutional Law and Global Health Policy and co-faculty director of the O’Neill Institute. “Through Georgetown Law’s health law LL.M. program, our students are trained to apply their specialized legal skills to champion innovative, collaborative, and effective health policies and laws throughout our nation and the world.”
The incoming class hails from 13 countries and 4 continents. About 20% are from the United States, and 80% are international students, highlighting the global reach of the program.
“While strong progress has been made in the last few decades on health promotion and disease prevention, the world continues to face multiple health challenges that are increasing in complexity, frequency, and impact, while inequities are as cavernous as ever,” said Professor Lawrence Gostin, Georgetown University Distinguished University Professor and faculty director of the O’Neill Institute. “With global health now a multidisciplinary endeavor, it is critical for us to leverage the knowledge, identities, and professional experiences of our students to strengthen health governance and infrastructure.”
The health law LL.M. class of 2024/2025 is made up of individuals with various professional and educational backgrounds, including non-governmental organizations, the private sector, government, and academia.
The LL.M. program allows law graduates to further develop their expertise at the intersections of health and law through a comprehensive and innovative curriculum, along with various career and professional development opportunities. Health law students have a unique opportunity to learn from leading faculty at Georgetown Law, contribute to cutting-edge research, and engage with alumni and O’Neill Institute staff.
“The health law LL.M. program at Georgetown Law also offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to not only join a vibrant intellectual community but also learn from and be guided by our exceptional faculty,” noted Professor Goodwin. “Through the mentorship of distinguished faculty, students are set up for success in shaping public health in their own countries and worldwide,” added Professor Gostin.
