Building a movement to bring together workers and universities to make processing plants into safe, healthy, and just workplaces for all.

About

The food industry systematically exploits poultry and meatpacking workers by stealing wages, suppressing unionization, exploiting the vulnerability of immigrant workers, discriminating based on race and gender, and maintaining unsafe and unhealthy working conditions — among the worst in the United States.

CCHI is co-creating a first-of-its-kind worker-led consortium, the Just Purchasing Consortium — a worker-led collaborative harnessing worker power and knowledge with university purchasing power on a national scale to support the workers who supply our food.

Our Work

The Just Purchasing Consortium (JPC) brings together universities and worker centers in six states to leverage their collective purchasing power to bring safe, healthy, and just working conditions to workers in poultry and meatpacking plants.

To date, the JPC to date includes three universities in Washington D.C., California, and Michigan and worker centers in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, and Texas with plans to expand to more states and to workers in more sectors of the food chain.
