Access to Oral Health Care: Amending Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistant Scopes of Practice in Washington, DC

In January 2023, Sara Hoverter and dental hygienist Brittany R. Harris were invited to present to the D.C. Board of Dentistry on the oral health crisis in the District. They addressed ways to modernize D.C. dental hygienists’ scope of practice to expand access to care by allowing them direct access to patients in public health settings, such as long-term care facilities, federally qualified health centers, and school-based health centers.
