In an effort to further extend international educational and research opportunities, the O’Neill Institute is collaborating with three institutions in Asia – two in Seoul, South Korea and one in Taipei, Taiwan.

The institutes share common interests of furthering global health law. “Since our founding, the O’Neill Institute has explored for ways to export our knowledge and seek out unique approaches to solving the worlds most pressing health issues,” says Oscar Cabrera, executive director of the institute. “These newest collaborations complement that effort.”

The three institutes are Ewha Institute for Biomedical Law and Ethics at Ewha Womans University, in Seoul, South Korea, a research center “dedicated to improving legal and ethical standards for health care and biomedical technology;” Institutum Iurisprudentiae, at Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan, whose mission is to advance the development basic legal studies; and the JW LEE Center for Global Medicine at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea, which pioneers work “in the field of global cooperation.”

All three organizations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the O’Neill Institute this fall.

As part of the collaboration, the three institutions will engage in activities including collaborative research and exchange of information, the planning of joint conferences, seminars and meetings for education and research, and develop opportunities for the institutions to host adjunct faculty or designated visiting professors.

“Another specific aim is to expose our international colleagues to the O’Neill Institute’s innovative programs examining transnational complex health law issues,” Cabrera says. The O’Neill Institute offers two Master of Laws (LL.M.) programs – one in Global Health Law and a second in Global Health Law and International Institutions (in collaboration with the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland). Additional information about our educational programs can be found here.
