CD4 testing is the gateway to advanced HIV disease (AHD) care — critical for assessing immune status, guiding clinical management, and identifying the risk of opportunistic infections. While CD4 testing was once the mainstay of national HIV programs, it became neglected in the HIV response as viral load became more widely available.
According to the latest CHAI HIV Market Report, the supply of CD4 tests will fall short of global needs, ranging from 1.6 to 3.9 million tests every year for the next four years. As a cornerstone of AHD management, not meeting CD4 testing needs could risk leaving people living with AHD without timely and life-saving care.
